Spring and Summer Vampire Movies

We have two vampire movies to look forward to this Spring and Summer, Renfield and The Last Voyage of the Demeter.

Renfield premiered last Friday in theaters. According to Rotten Tomatoes, it has a 58% “Tomatometer Score” and an 80% “Audience Score.” The New York Times calls it “93 minutes of well-wrought absurdity.” Judging from the trailer, it is a light-hearted take on two classic characters. This looks playful, funny, and has an interesting premise: what if you hate your boss? What if your boss is actually Count Dracula?

The Last Voyage of the Demeter comes out in August of this year. From the trailer it looks like a great one to watch. I love the isolated setting of the ship at sea and it hints at what Dracula will look like in the movie. Less attractive Count and more Nosferatu inspired. I can already tell this movie is going to play with silence and sound to add to the scare factor in the film. This is definitely a movie you should go see at the theaters because the trailer alone for it is quite dark in aesthetics.

The title references a chapter in Stoker’s novel where Mina pastes a newspaper clipping from The Daily Telegraph in her journal. It includes the “‘Log of the Demeter’” where the Captain writes about strange occurrences onboard the ship set for Whitby. That newspaper is from August 8th. On August 10th, Mina writes about she and Lucy attended the funeral for the Captain of the ship. And then, on August 11th, Mina journals about waking up to find Lucy missing. She finds Lucy outside while Lucy is being attacked by a creature that Mina is unsure is man or beast. She describes it as “long and black” and having “a white face and red, gleaming eyes,” which we all know is Dracula.

Now, why is all this important? Because the movie is set to be released on August 11th.
